Sony Cyber-shot Memory Cards: Memory Stick or SD?

Compatibility details are based on manufacturer documentation. How we check ↗

Cyber-shot is a camera family, not a card standard. The DSC-W55 uses Memory Stick Duo / PRO Duo and does not take SD. The DSC-W350 has an SD / SDHC option; the DSC-W800 also supports SDXC. Check the full DSC model before choosing a card.

Start with the full DSC model.

Read the letters and numbers on the camera or its label: DSC-W55, DSC-W350 and DSC-W800 are different models. A retailer’s “Sony camera memory card” category can combine cards for several generations. Matching only the brand or W-series name is not enough.

The table below shows the card route used in each Findicam guide. Some cameras also support other documented media. It gives a starting choice for that exact camera, not a claim that every capacity or every adapter works.

Six exact-model card choices.

For DSC-W350, Sony’s handbook lists SD and SDHC and records operation checks through 32GB. Do not extend that statement to SDXC. For DSC-W800 and WX350, open their guides for supported alternatives and movie-mode requirements.

Memory Stick, Duo and PRO Duo are not interchangeable labels.

Pay attention to the complete card name. A full-size original Memory Stick is a different physical format from Memory Stick Duo. For the W55, Findicam’s starting choice is a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo; its manual also distinguishes the media required for its highest-quality movie setting.

Do not assume a microSD-to-PRO-Duo adapter has the same compatibility as the media named in the camera manual. The guide’s recommendation refers to a genuine supported card, not an unverified adapter combination. If you already have an adapter, check that exact camera/card/adapter setup before depending on it.

The reader must support the card you actually use.

For a W55 using PRO Duo, choose a reader explicitly supporting Memory Stick Duo / PRO Duo. An SD-only reader does not become a Memory Stick reader because its USB plug fits your computer. If a reader has a full-size Memory Stick slot, check whether it needs the correct Duo adapter.

For a W350 using SDHC, an SDHC-compatible SD reader is the relevant route. If you choose its Memory Stick alternative instead, choose a Memory Stick reader. After matching the slot and card standard, match the reader’s USB-A or USB-C connection to your computer. Phone compatibility needs its own check.

If the camera says the card is unsupported.

  1. Confirm the full camera model and the card’s complete format and capacity.
  2. Check the model guide for supported media and adapter requirements.
  3. If the camera can display existing photos, back them up with a compatible reader or data cable.
  4. Follow the exact manual’s formatting instructions only after saving the files you need.

A reader or computer can introduce a second compatibility problem. Sony notes that SDXC uses exFAT and that an incompatible device may ask to format it. Do not accept a formatting prompt when the card contains photos you need. Try a compatible device first.
