Canon ELPH 180 vs ELPH 190 IS: Zoom, Stabilization and Wi-Fi

Compatibility details are based on manufacturer documentation. How we check ↗

Both are 20MP CCD cameras. The ELPH 190 IS adds a wider 24–240mm 10× lens, optical stabilization and Wi-Fi/NFC hardware. The ELPH 180 uses an 8× 28–224mm lens and Digital IS. Both charge their removable batteries externally.

The documented differences.

Choose by the features you will use: the ELPH 190 IS fits more into the frame at its 24mm end and reaches farther at 240mm. Its optical lens-shift stabilization is also a real hardware difference. The ELPH 180 is slightly smaller, and a demonstrated-working example with the correct kit remains worth comparing with an untested 190 IS. Both have fixed 2.7-inch screens.

On the ELPH 180, the dedicated Digital IS shooting mode records about 5MP rather than the camera’s full 20MP. This does not mean all of its modes are limited to 5MP. The ELPH 190 IS uses optical lens-shift stabilization; camera-shake reduction still does not freeze a moving subject. If wireless transfer influences your choice, test it with your actual phone and software before buying. The hardware specification alone does not guarantee that setup.

ELPH 180 is the IXUS 175. ELPH 190 IS is the IXUS 180. Do not confuse the IXUS 180 with the ELPH 180; their matching numbers are not matching cameras.

Years are manufacturer market/launch years. Focal lengths are 35mm-equivalent values. Fixed-screen descriptions are checked against manufacturer rear-view diagrams. This is a comparison of documented features, not a hands-on image-quality test.

Compare the complete kit.

Read the exact codes before counting an included accessory as useful. Both cameras may share a battery family while their cable or charger details still need checking.

Both use the NB-11L/NB-11LH battery family and CB-2LF/CB-2LFE external chargers. Their Mini-USB data cables do not charge the installed battery. A supported full-size SD card and matching reader provide a transfer route independent of wireless apps.

Check the actual camera before choosing.

  • Ask for a new original photograph and a demonstration of shooting and playback.
  • Try focus, flash, zoom, buttons and the battery/card door.
  • Include the cost of any missing battery, charger, supported card and reader.
  • Check the return terms and what the seller has actually tested.
