How to Transfer Canon PowerShot Photos to an iPhone
Compatibility details are based on manufacturer documentation. How we check ↗
START HERE
For the three Canon models below, use a reader that supports the camera’s SD card and your iPhone’s connector. Turn the camera off, put its card in the reader, connect it to the iPhone and import in Photos. You do not need the camera’s battery charger to read a removable card.
Find my camera’s parts ↗1. Match the card to the camera first.
Before buying a reader or replacing a card, identify the complete PowerShot model. These three cameras use full-size SD-family cards, but they do not support the same standards. A card that your iPhone reader supports can still be unsuitable for your camera.
| Camera | Card standard in guide | Reader requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Canon PowerShot SD600 | SD | SD card reader supporting SD |
| Canon PowerShot SD1000 | SD / SDHC | SD card reader supporting SD / SDHC |
| Canon PowerShot ELPH 180 | SD / SDHC / SDXC | SD card reader supporting SD / SDHC / SDXC |
For SD600, the guide recommends standard SD up to 2GB, without SDHC or SDXC. For SD1000, it lists SD / SDHC. ELPH 180 also supports SDXC. Follow the capacity guidance in the linked model guide rather than using a larger card simply because it fits the slot.
2. Check your iPhone’s port.
Look at the connector on your own phone. Choose a compatible USB-C SD reader for a USB-C iPhone, or a compatible Lightning SD reader for a Lightning iPhone. Apple lists both USB-C and Lightning SD readers in its camera-adapter guidance.
Read the reader’s device-support details as well as its connector name. Confirm support for the card format you actually have. If you already have a microSD card inside a full-size SD adapter, the reader still needs to support its underlying card standard; the adapter does not turn SDXC into standard SD.
3. Copy a small selection first.
- Turn the camera off before removing its memory card.
- Insert the card into the compatible reader and connect the reader to the iPhone.
- Open Photos and select the connected card or the import option. The location varies by iOS version.
- Import a few photos, then check that they open from your iPhone’s library.
- Import the rest and keep the originals on the card until you have confirmed the copy.
Apple’s current instructions describe importing through Photos. On iOS 18, the connected camera or card appears under Devices in Collections; other versions may show Import. Follow the Apple guide for your installed version if the screen differs.
If the card or some pictures do not appear.
Disconnect and reconnect the reader, then check that it supports both your card and your phone. Try a compatible computer to separate a card problem from a phone/reader problem. Avoid formatting a card that still contains the only copy of your photos.
Apple notes that edited, renamed or computer-copied files may not import through its camera-adapter workflow, and some media formats may not display on iOS. Keep the camera’s original files and try importing them to a computer if only some items are missing.
If the camera also cannot use the card, work through camera-side SD card checks. A phone import problem and a camera compatibility problem can have different causes.
Can you use the Canon USB cable instead?
A direct USB route depends on the exact camera, data cable, compatible camera adapter and phone setup. Check both the Canon manual and Apple’s supported-device guidance before buying that combination. The removable-card route lets you choose the reader independently of the camera’s USB socket.
For the SD1000 and ELPH 180, the Mini-USB cable transfers photos; it does not charge the camera. Their batteries charge externally. If your camera’s battery is empty but the pictures are on its removable card, reading that card avoids needing to power the camera for the transfer. See the USB charging guide if your goal is to get the camera working again as well.
