A LITTLE CAMERA HELP

Why Won’t an SD Card Work in My Old Digital Camera?

Start with the card standard your exact camera supports. An older digicam may need standard SD, Memory Stick Duo, xD-Picture Card or another format. A card that fits, or comes with an adapter, does not establish camera compatibility.

1. Check SD, SDHC and SDXC separately.

The Canon PowerShot SD500 uses standard SD up to 2GB in this finder and does not support SDHC or SDXC. The later Canon PowerShot SD1000 supports SD / SDHC; a full-size 4GB SDHC is the simple choice in its guide. A larger, newer card is not automatically a suitable replacement.

2. Make sure the slot actually takes SD.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 takes Memory Stick Duo / PRO Duo, not SD. Its guide recommends a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo and a reader with a dedicated compatible slot. A standard SD reader cannot read that card.

The Fujifilm FinePix F30 takes xD-Picture Card. A standard 512MB xD card is the simple choice here; check both camera and reader support before choosing a Type M or H card. An SD card cannot replace xD in this slot.

3. Check whether your camera has removable storage.

The Nikon COOLPIX S01 stores photos in approximately 7.3GB of internal memory and has no memory-card slot. Use its UC-E16 cable to copy photos to a computer. Buying an SD card or card reader will not add storage to this model.

4. Match capacity and reader support.

Use the standard and capacity listed in the camera’s guide. If you can view photos on the camera but not on another device, also check the reader: its slot, supported card standard and connection to your phone or computer all matter.

5. Copy photos before formatting.

Formatting deletes photos. If the card holds files you need, copy them using a compatible reader or the camera’s documented data cable before following the manufacturer’s formatting instructions. Do not format a card simply because a phone or computer asks you to.
